Queens Park Arena Competition, Glasgow

Our entry was one of 10 short-listed from the 77 entries for the design competition to replace the Queen's Park Bandstand in Glasgow.

The proposal involves a simple idea to use an organic form of a spider and drape it as a steel frame over the arena area. This can then be used to suspend canopies to provide shelter to varying degrees depending on what is required. It also provides a really strong visual image and marker beacon for the arena. It focuses attention on the stage and is bi-directional with a small stage to the rear for additional flexibility (different sizes of event or two events at once). The existing arena steps would be conserved and hedges retained but opened up, particularly to the back of the arena. The overall idea is to maximise flexibility, visibility with a little fun in realising a modern structure which reflects what a cast iron bandstand can become using modern materials and forms.
